Short Belgian History In 1830 a buffer state was created between the Protestant Germanic north and the Catholic Latin south of Europe. Flanders, the south of the Netherlands (both speaking Dutch) had always been a historical and cultural rich region. From that time on that majority in the new, now french speaking, Belgium became totally discriminated in language and culture. Without any outside help or a revolution, but with a constant fight for a Flemish state there now is a federal Belgium. Up till now there is a territorial border battle against frenchifying. (Brussels is a so-called bilangual enclave in Flemish territory dominated by french speaking people who would like to expand it). The cartoons made around 1960 about this subject today still are actual.
