The materials Already in this stage the choice you make determs the end result. Clay exists in fine or coarse and in different colours. Porselain clay is very fine and has to be baked at a temperature of 1250¡C or higher. Designing the model This is where the creation starts. You can start from a basic hump of clay and make it hollow afterwards or you can construct the model with lumps of clay. Falling down by its own weight has to be avoided in both cases. The drying process The sculpture now has to dry very slowly on the air until it becomes almost dry. Now you can take it in your hands without changing the form. There is still a chance to rework it if the clay is made wet again. After complete drying the model can't be restored and can go into the oven.
Into the oven The first baking (bisquit) in a ceramic oven with a temperature up to 900¡C makes a faience from the clay. All water is gone now and it will never be clay again. The second time the sculpture goes to the oven the temperature can go to 1200¡C and the stoneware becomes waterproof and resistant to all weather conditions. Not yet finished Between the different bakings colour can be added with glazing, oxydes, pigments or mud. Mud is a mixture of clay, water and oxyde and gives a matting result. Each metaloxydes give a certain colour (copper becomes green, iron a reddish brown, cobalt blue ...) and they get a different colour each time with a different temperature in the oven. With glazing is glas (silex) the main component. The end result of all this is of course very dependent of the knowledge and experience of the maker.
